Project or Lesson Name:  Trimester Review Game

Project Description:  In preparation for our end of trimester test, Kristi and I wanted to have our students engaged in generating and leading a review.  We devised a “review game project,” splitting the students into groups of 4 and assigning them with a subsection of the material covered in the first trimester.  Each group was tasked with creating a digital review game including student-generated questions that assessed the content.  The group ran the game during classtime with their peers and then had access to each team’s game via links in our shared oneNote to use for review purposes.  This project involved student generated content, students teaching and leading class, and digital collaboration among team members.

Student Examples (Embed if possible):  The student-generated games are nearly all PowerPoints, so cannot be embedded.  However, I have some screen shots below and would be happy to share these files with anyone interested!

Reflection:

- TPACK Analysis (Strengths, Weakness):  We used groupwork, peer collaboration, and student explained concepts in order to review the trimester’s content (linear functions, absolute value functions, piecewise functions, solving equations).  The technology choice was left open to the students in that we provided several examples of technology-based review games, but we did not inhibit their creativity.  We shared each student’s digital game via a shared oneNote.

- What went well?  What would you do differently? What student feedback did you receive?  The students enjoyed the project and getting the opportunity to create review materials.  Some students even asked if we would perhaps use some of their questions on the test itself since they were so thorough and creative.  Some students gain insight about the choices that have to be made in order to run a game with all of their peers participating, some groups discovering that their game did not actually play out how they’d hoped.

We suggested several different forms of digital review games to the students and left it open for their ideas as well.  However, nearly all groups chose to do a Jeopardy game on Powerpoint as a result of the ease of searching for an online template.  In the future, we will lay out more specific guidance and perhaps eliminate PowerPoint Jeopardy as a game option so that our digital games will reflect more diversity and also afford the students an opportunity to develop some new technology skills.
